comedycomedycomedy

in an effort to fix my errant sleeping ways i decided this week would be devoid of gigs. that every night, instead of trying to make people lol from a stage with my guitar and shtuff, that i would crawl into my bed and sleep the sleep of the tired man that i am.

but lets face it... that was never gonna happen was it...

so this week i am in

anseo tonight. on a tuesday, which is strange..... but its a gig for one of aidans comedy classes and hes expecting 30/40 people in so im really looking forward to it! anseo is a great little club and its very fun to mc when theres a good crowd in!

the comedy cellar tomorrow. now... this one im excited about! not only is the cellar the only club held in the international which i havent done! its only an open spot so i have to drop in a solid 7 minutes of whopper ass stuff to get the crowd laughing... ie heard from a few people that its a hard crowd, but the only thing you can do with a hard crowd is make them laugh hard by... comedying at them hard? i think? does that work? is to comedy a verb? :P but yeah, had some reassuring words from Eric Lalor and he said it was a fine little gig! so PUMPED!

the international on sunday. new material night, which is appropriate... because i was supposed to take this week off to work on material! and i have been! using material is all new an adventurous for me. im very excited. i see bright things coming.

:) laughs and the likes to you all

what makes a good night

adventure makes a good night.
getting out of your comfort zone makes a good night.
Pingu/Sean/Paddy/Various other legends make a good night.
Talking to ridiculously hot girls makes a good night.
Kissing ridiculously hot girls makes a good night.
most importantly, keeping a smile on your face makes a good night

today was excellent, woke up, strolled down the street, got my burrito fix, hit town with pingu, met a load of people we knew, strolled around trinity, got a lovely jacket, went into ucd, met sean, adventured.

my plan for this week was to try and get to bed around midnight every night to sort my sleeping patterns, but right now its ten past 5 and i couldnt care less.

life is good. the songs are pretty. everyone is smiling and the world keeps turning around.

tomorow im going to go and buy some nice clothes, smile at strangers, buy some sandwhiches for the homeless people i know wouldnt prefer gear and maybe feed some ducks.

until then, i'll sleep and dream about the future.
because the future is a dream, and a good one at that. none of this recession volcano mumbo jumbo that gets shoved in my face every day.
fuck sake, why cant people stop living in constant fear of everything getting fucked and just have the laughs and smile.
cant remember who said it but "when youre near death and your life flashes in front of your eyes, make it worth watching."

thats a plan right there.

embrace the sun, talk to the pretty people you were afraid of approaching when you were a teenager, high 5 people on the street, feed the fucking ducks and you will feel like royalty.

commit to the future and its yours. dont fear it. fear limits you, and then youre trapped and fucked.
remove that fear and you can do whatever the fuck you want. and what could be more important than that.

be happy

gig report for the week :D

Ive been around these past few weeks, doing 4/5 shows a week for the last 3 weeks and let me tell you, im fucking exhausted... looking at it, im delighted because it shows me that im getting to be more in demand and by association, i suppose it means im doing something right, im hitting the right notes on stage and my interaction is getting sharper etc.

but its gotten to the stage where im just tired now and looking at a few nights off now seems like a delicious treat :)

this week has been a mixed bag of gigs, going to write short little reports up for each of them and then go to bed because im a tired tired man :)

tuesday had me headlining the wonderful milk and cookies in the exchange in temple bar. now, as you probably know, milk and cookies isnt strictly a comedy show, but a mix of storytelling and comedy. that being said, a lot of the story tellers could be comedians in their own right, being excessivly funny and having perfect delivery.
it was a tasty gig, i ended up doing 25 minutes or so, lovely big reactive crowd and a lot of fun, so yeah... milk and cookies was epic!

wednesday had me in laugh out loud in anseo, which took me slightly by suprise because i thought i was in the next week :P
it wasnt a great gig, which took me by suprise, seeing as anseo is usually one of my favourite venues to play. that being said, i think there was just a strange attitude in the room, no loud laughers and unexplainable tension, even though it was a great lineup! glen coco, foil arms and hog, myself, cathal murray and micheal mee, with gerry mcbride mcing. what could go wrong? i dunno, you tell me! it was the first gig in a long time that left me feeling pretty poor about stuff, but when you fall off the horse, you get back on!

thursay. tonight. i was in the international, which is the spiritual home of irish comedy and you can never know who'll show up and what will go down! i was getting pumped for the gig, all ready and such and who strolls in but canadian comedy star tony law. having laughed my hole off at his videos on youtube just the other day, it got me super psyched and i was happy with the gig, although it lagged a small bit at times! the night ended up with;
myself,
colin murphy(the panel)
fred cooke(spar ad)
johnny candon(im not sure, but hes been around)
tony law (paramount etc.)

all on stage and singing a comedic version of video killed the radio star

it was intense! very happy!

anyway, it is 3:20, and im really really tired so im gonna go sleep :) youre all beautiful.

night

stand up

after a brilliant party last night i cycled home and slept a wonderful sleep...

i was woken this morning by my stereo blaring out stand up by the prodigy... and i feel fuckin' AWESOME.

ive been told to spend the first day of my adult life like i intend to spend the rest of it. and i do. i woke up at twelve, strolled around my apartment for a while wearing a silk robe, laughed with my friends and now im going to get a delicious burrito from pablo picante, play some xbox and gig tonight.

yes sir.

if this is my life now, i must have been some kind of ghandi legend in my last one.

peace out

light the candles

im 21 today, and i feel no different. on paper, im now a fully fledged adult fending (almost) completely for myself, living in a beautiful city centre apartment, working several cool jobs and following his ultimate goal of becoming a professional, working stand up comedian.

but i suppose im not gonna magically feel older on the day so im looking over my life in the last year.

the biggest change this year, has without a doubt been moving out... im so lucky to have done so with the amazing lads that are kevin fitzpatrick and sean regan, the boys are fucking fantastic.
the buzz and positive vibes ive felt in that apartment since we moved in back in june are second to none, and i think over those past months, all three of us have developed as people so much its ridiculous, ive learnt so much from you both lads, and i cant thank you enough.

i feel as if ive got life sorted, and even though its taken 21 years to the day to get this far, i feel fantastic... the last year has been an interesting one for me... i suppose the second biggest change in my life in the last year happened directly after seeing adam hills at the kilkenny cat laughs and realising that nothing on earth would give me greater joy than being that man.

not adam hills obviously. cool guy, but i like having both my legs.

that man who can make a crowd laugh, feel fantastic, at ease and welcome. make everyone in the room friends for however long hes on stage for. thats an amazing thing.

ive met some amazing people along the comedic road, so i suppose its only fair to give a few shout outs... in no particular order.

Aidan Killian, this guy gave me my start in comedy, got me my first gigs and is still giving me gigs today, ive learnt a lot off him in terms of comedy and mc'ing and im glad to be able to call this man a friend. also, the club he runs, laugh out loud, which is in anseo on a wednesday is fantastic, and you should check it out!

David Reilly, dude, what can i say... myself and Davey started comedy within a few days of each other and we've been gigging a lot since, we did the cat laughs together, the leitrim laughs together, and we're bound to gig together a hell of a lot in the future. when i first met dave he was a shy, withdrawn dude who was afraid of talking to new people and going out of his comfort zone. they say the most important thing about the destination is the journey you undertake to get there and i can say that regardless of daveys destination in comedy, the journey has changed him in an amazing way in just a year... congrats buddy.

Gerry Mcbride, this guy is fucking funny. and not only that, he is exceptionally sound. i cant say a bad word about Gerry. except maybe his tshirts are a bit tight...
Gerry is one of the main reasons i started a blog, having read his confessions of a joker blog last year and now reading his new blog, "no punchlines ". an amazing comedian, a great friend and a pretty inspiring guy all around. GWAN GERRY!

Andrew Stanley and Fred Cooke, Andrew runs the mish mash on a tuesday, which he co-hosts with Fred. now, to anyone who has seen them, i think you'll agree they are ridiculously funny, cool and easy going guys. my first time on the stage of the inter was in the mish mash, and im in there pretty regularly now, and its one of my favourite gigs to do. always a big crowd, always a great laugh, and i always look forward to appearing there. go to the mish mash!

Jarlath Regan.... what a ridiculously sound guy. the biggest gentleman in comedy, and always good for practical sound advice. also, get smart is one of the funniest bits of comedy ive seen in a long long time. thanks for everything Jar!

Aidan and Des Bishop... i remember seeing Des doing his immersion sketch ten years ago or so on the late late show and laughing like only an eleven year old can, even though i didnt really know what an immersion was at that stage. after my first show in the aidan and des's night in the inter, which des was at, he gave me some fantastic advice which has spurred me on and pushed me to gig more and more, write more and more and develop myself as a comedian a lot, wasnt much, but it went a long way.
Aidan is also a great guy, resident mc of the international, and another comedian who i respect a lot. when i was starting to do comedy people would ask if i was doing the international, and now i can say that i am. thanks Aidan for everything.

Comedy Ireland, these guys let me run my own night in the twisted pepper, street justice which has been a bangin' success so far. we get great crowds in, great comedians in and i dont think ive ever seen anyone die in there. not badly anyway.
Comedy ireland gave me the chance to perform at the kilkenny cat laughs also which, i suppose caused this whole comedy bug to take me over!

to all the people ive gigged with, the vast majority of you are awesome, its a pleasure to share the stage with you. to all the promoters who have given me gigs. thank you. Damo Clarke, thanks for shouting street justice every time i see you. and most of all... audiences, thank you for laughing. you make me do what i do.

twenty one years old... its been an interesting year indeed. Girl drama a'plenty. fuck all boy drama. no injuries. some fantastic trips.. paddy, lets make edinburgh happen again soon. James, lets get a trip on anywhere soon and spread the ESE love worldwide.

to my main boys;

James Brady
Sean Regan
Kevin Fitzpatrick
Patrick Kiernan
Sean Walsh
Oscar Lyons

you are all beyond chieftans, thanks for making this last year the best one of my life. ive learnt a lot from you all and theres a long way yet to go.

to my girls;

Catherine
Finola (and by extension Godot)
Caoimhe
Liaden
Mary
Clara
Laura c
Muir
Emilia
Anna c

you guys are all amazing, proving that not all girls are in the world are either bent, psychos, clingers or generally crap people. more guys should know you all, you could change the world if you all worked together.

and lastly.. my parents. without the two of you meeting in doheny and nesbitts all those years ago, there would be no me writing this right now. thanks for bringing me up to be the man i am today, thanks for your continued support in what ever i do, thanks for the love, the care, the shoulders to cry on over the years. the clothes, the food, the shelter, the fights, the holidays and everything else.

i cant even find the words to thank you enough.

so at 11:34 pm tonight... i will be 21 years old. a far cry from the little screaming bundle i was all those years ago.
i just hope the next 21 years are even a fraction as good as the last.

all limits are self imposed, youre all amazing and i love you all.

Thank you.

Marcus.

at the end of a week

this week has been a great one. lots of fun, lots of discoveries, lots of things that make me happy.

monday, i ended up mc'ing a gig in anseo! lots of new talent, including the son of a very well known comedian who rocked the shit out of the place!

tuesday... i did something which i cant remember! its been a long long week...

wednesday was epic! was supporting swedish superstar magnus betner in anseo again, and it was a great night of comedy! ended up heading out after to whelans with comedians and by coincidence made friends with swedish people! its true... they really are better looking than irish people.

thursday was fantastic! went to see kick ass with lil' c! really awesome girl, bumped into people who i knew every 20 steps though so it got kind of annoying! then the movie.
kick ass is amazing, everybody go see it. its not a kids movie. its not an adults movie. its just amazing! :D

deals with an interesting subject as well, which is it that at some level, everybody would like to be a hero, but nobody actually does.
fascinating stuff, in a really interesting format!

friday.. i did something! cant really remember!

saturday, i had too gigs! was running street justice in the bernard shaw which was awesome! didnt realise just how many people can fit on double decker bus!
then another gig on saturday in the twisted pepper!

final gig of the week was tonight in the capital! epic lineup... myslf, george fox, tommy nicholcon snd jsck wise headlining. all epically funny!

i wish i could write more but im literally half asleep!!

youre all lovely

sweet dreams

sweet dreams!

horizon

wires cross the horizon
like music staves on a page
sitting birds fool me as notes
displaying the music of the passing city
discordant and modern
which doesnt suprise me.

this country thrives on discord.
as do we,
what else would we talk about with our friends?
"this is shit"
"shes a bitch"
"this tea tastes like socks"

the problem is that discord confuses people
musically it makes you cover your ears to block it out
but when you realise that its all a joke
all you can do is laugh and take the wave.

so life, mon amour, although you mess around
with musical birds on wires
and the sun blinding me when i wake up
i still smile.
i know i love you and im doing something right,
and it seems you love me too.

as icarus said,
all limits are self imposed.

there is no horizon.
